Microsoft PinPoint, for those that don’t know, is a directory of Microsoft partners. In Microsoft’s own words:

“Pinpoint helps business customers find technology experts, software applications and professional services that solve specific business issues and support long-term goals. At the same time, Pinpoint helps developers and technology service providers get applications and professional services to the customers who need them.”

It is intended as a two way street. Partners add themselves, what they do, and where they are – in the hope customers will find them. Customer can then search the directory to find software and services near to them that they will hopefully find useful.

The site has been around for a fair while now, and has lots and lots of partners on it. A quick search for ‘SharePoint’ returns 1177 results in the UK. Flipping over to the US site returns 3176 results.

Once you select a result you can view the company details. This is a basic profile of the company, what they do, and to contact them. It also displays their Microsoft competencies and certifications. The other interesting thing is the ‘Reviews’ section, where clients can rate the company and provide comments on how they found the service and products offered.

Just how useful is PinPoint?

I’m interested in just how useful people (that is Microsoft partners and customers) find PinPoint. My personal experiences are mixed. Working with different partners, I’ve spent lots of time trying to get good reviews on there. It always seemed without a bit of strong arming, clients where unlikely to stumble on the site and add a comment. As a customer, I’m not sure what the benefits are over Google? Reviews are useful, but a bit staid. And the rest of the info can be found on the respective companies websites. Google works well as a directory of sorts. I guess everything in once place is useful, and filtering by country or Microsoft competencies is handy. I don’t know, the site just feels a bit stale, a bit static.

What do you think?

I would really like to know what you guys think though. If you are a customer, or a partner, please leave a comment and let me know any of the the following:

  • Do you use PinPoint at all?
  • Is so why? What do you like about it?
  • If not why? What puts you off?
  • Have you ever added a review or comment?
  • Do you think the partner profile pages are any good?
  • Do you think PinPoint is useful and serving a purpose?
  • What improvements would you make?

Let me know below, it would be great to get a few different views.

Our experience has been mixed. We have listing on PinPoint for our SharePoint and Dynamics CRM solutions. We have found our Dynamics CRM marketplace entry through PinPoint is very effective for creating awareness/visibility. One of the reasons I think it could be because the marketplace is integrated within Dynamics CRM. However, the Office 365 marketplace entries through PinPoint doesn't seem to be as effective as Dynamics CRM marketplace. Publishing on PinPoint is a bit cumbersome. Changes take a long time to get approved. Other issues is that the Rating/Comments are not much useful and few on lot of the entries. One major improvement would be that the marketplaces should be integrated within the product like the Dynamics CRM marketplace.

Never heard of it until you mentioned it on Yammer... Is that my failing or theirs I wonder?

I had never heard of this site. It's value for me now though is for looking for a new role and it's very useful for that from a career point of view. Are companies going to use it to find a partner? One thing I would say to change would be to highlight how to choose your country more clearly than it is at the top right. It is a good directory though. And what's http://www.partnerpoint.com/? Seems to very similar.

Hi! I am a MS Partner and MS Cloud Partner. I have used it to find other companies to partner with. It is easy to find others based on area of concentration and/or location but has not been as easy to register my company in all of the places I belong. I have not added a review or comment or had any one add to mine (but my company was started in March so may not be enough time). I believe most profiles are good in a concise way but MS will only let you add but so much information. I think PinPoint is useful but not well known. I didn't know about it until I became a partner. I would make it more well known if I could.

We are MS BizSpark partners; we are building (do we ever stop with software?) a CRM product on MS-SQL server and ASP.NET. We have listed with Pinpoint- with all the issues mentioned above- slow speed of response, changes take time etc. We would not have minded all that, but for the fact that there has been almost zero profile views. I wish MS would release some numbers regarding the number of people who visit the site and what they do there.

How does Microsoft make money on PinPoint? Do they take a percentage of the sale, or just use the costs of joining their partner program to fund it?

Chris Wright on March 7, 2013

It is funded purely to boost the partner program. It doesn't generate its own revenue.
